After a series of difficult medical diagnoses, Germie’s founding team learned through experience the damaging effects of a health care system that is built for only half of the world’s population. In 2018, while Nicole and Coco lived together in London, Nicole was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer. As the two Americans navigated the UK’s unfamiliar health care landscape, it became clear to them that their education was lacking. Through discussions with doctors, nurses, insurance providers, and administrators–accompanied by countless hours of their own research–Nicole and Coco discovered a difficult truth: women need a reliable, accessible, and comprehensive solution for their health care questions that simply did not exist.
While in recovery, Nicole got straight to work creating Germie’s database: one built for women’s evolving health needs, governed by the principles of plain-language medical writing she honed at the University of Chicago. A couple of years later, Coco left the world of corporate consulting to join the Germie initiative full-time.
Even though 51% of the world’s population is biologically female, our health care systems continue to deprioritize and neglect women’s health data. Germie is here to help bridge the gender gap in health care by providing women with the tools they need to navigate their evolving health needs throughout their lives. We believe in the maxim that knowledge is power, and we aim to provide the educational and support tools necessary to empower women’s health care decisions, no matter the scope.
